FALL 2011 ATHLETIC NEWSLETTER

The Fall in Review

This season had a little bit of everything.  Record heat, record snow, torrential rains, and Hopkinton athletes succeeding on the fields and courses.  Congratulations to our Girls Cross Country team who captured the State Championship for a fifth consecutive time, as well as to our Boys Cross Country team and Golf team who both finished in second place.  Outside of that, we had a JV Boys soccer team and a varsity Field Hockey team who sported undefeated records into the last week of the regular season, and varsity Boys and Girls Soccer teams who both participated in the State Tournament.  JV Field Hockey needs to be mentioned as well; despite a limited schedule they played hard all season.

Thank you to the athletes, coaches, parents, and fans who helped deal with all of the weather related issues this fall.  It turned out to be another exciting season, and hopefully will pave the way for a great winter and spring.

                                               -Dan Meserve

                                               Athletic Director

JV Boys Soccer

Captains: Gabe Nichols, Keenan Trahnstrom

Thanks to their youth coaches these freshmen came into the season with experience and a winning attitude. Combined with the leadership of the returning sophomores  it lead to a very successful season. We finished with 11 wins and 1 loss. We scored 56 goals averaging more than 4 goals per game, while only giving up 9 goals and earning 7 shutouts. This team came a long way this season and with the help from Christian Nardi they learned the importance of being in shape, working hard, playing the ball wide, and having some fun.

JV Field Hockey

Captains: Maddie Donahue, Claire Herrmann, Jessi Quinn

The JV Field Hockey team had a successful season. The girls’ hard work and positive attitudes allowed them to end their season with a winning record. Even during tough games the girls played with dedication. The team was lead by captains Maddie Donahue, Claire Herman and Jessie Quinn. Freshman Becca Shatney stepped up at the beginning of the season to fill the important role of goalie. Freshman Maddie Cudmore was our leading scorer as an offensive wing followed by Emma Donahue. Sonja Leavitt and Jessi Quinn both played the key positions of center mid fielder.  Along with the varsity team, the JV team took time each week to teach younger field hockey players during our program called Buddy Field Hockey.  Thanks to the team for a great season.

Varsity Golf

Captains: Curtis Fraser and Ben Olimpio

The Hawks entered the season with high expectations thanks to the return of their top four scorers from last year.  Competing in Division IV for the first time ever, the team finished the regular season with a record of 12-9, and the 6th seed in the state tournament.  This record was a little deceptive, however, as our schedule saw us matched up eight times with the top three seeds.  Twice we lost to 2nd seed Newport by a single stroke.   This was all rectified at the Division IV Championship, where the Hawks surprised many but not themselves and emerged with the runner-up trophy.  In addition, three Hawks qualified for the individual championship.  Ben Olimpio fired a career-best 81 to finish 5th overall, while both Colin O’Keeffe and Sam Winslow excelled as well, finishing 10th and 11th respectively.  Taylor Cloutier represented Hopkinton in the Girls’ State Tournament, and shot a 50 to place 7th.

Our two seniors, Betty Wallingford and Curtis Fraser, were instrumental in the team’s success.  Wallingford finished her career with an impressive round of 57, while Fraser led the team over the entire season with a 46.2 average.  With ten players returning next season, the Hawks will look to continue to be a force in golf.

-       Coach Jeff Cahill

Varsity Boys Soccer

Captains: Killian Miller and Sam Ruderman

The 2011 boys soccer team worked hard all season long, experienced great team chemistry and controlled every single game played, as exhibited by an average of 13 shots on goal for Hopkinton per game and only 3 shots on goal per game by the opponents. In spite of the consistent play, however, a lack of finishing caused the team to fall short of its ultimate goal as it lost in the 1st round of the playoffs. The Hawks will miss the senior leadership of Sam Ruderman, Killian Miller, Matt Gleason, Jack Hastings and Nathan Sweny, but also look forward to a promising 2012 season with the return of 15 letter-winners.

                                    - Coach Scott Zipke

Varsity Field Hockey

The field hockey team finished the regular season with a 12 -2 record, their best overall record in recent history. Sophomore Brittany Marshall led all scorers with 26 goals and 9 assists over the year, while fellow sophomore goalie Maddy Bergethon had five shut outs and allowed only 12 goals this season.   In the post season, the Hawks got a bye through the preliminary round and had home field against 5th seed Stevens.   The team fought hard but unfortunately lost to Stevens in overtime, 2-1.  With the core of the team returning next season, the Hawks have a lot to look forward to.  Thank you seniors for all of your leadership and hard work this year and over the course of your careers.

                                    -Coach Patty Connolly

Varsity Girls Soccer

Captains: Leah Baron, Heather Coen, Paige Cook, Claire Nee

During the regular season the Hawks’ defense was solid, preventing any opponent from scoring more than two goals in a game against them and recording 8 shutouts.  Sabrey Montore’s speed kept opponents at bay, while those who did get through had to solve keeper Kelly Scammon, who secured 106 saves and allowed only 17 goals.  Offensively Courtney Benson led the team with 15 goals and 4 assists, while Tasha Bowie followed closely with 9 goals and 2 assists. Overall the Hawks had 388 shots while their opponents were given 141 opportunities.

Despite a difficult regular season schedule, the Hawks placed 8th in Division III and earned a first round bye.  In the second round, however, they drew top-ranked nemesis Bow, and the journey ended in a snowstorm.  Overall the team ended with an impressive record of 11 wins, 6 losses, and 2 ties.

All season long, it was great to have a team of 21 members acting as one unit, having fun together whether on or off the field. They were not coached to show separation in skill, because each player always has something to give, whether it is their humor or skill, there is always a place for those who want it.

                                    -Coach Lauri Izzi

Varsity Cross Country

Captains: Cam DeBrusk, Emma Geiger, Tess Hamilton, Shannon Nadeau, Sam Smith

2011 was another successful year for cross country. Every runner showed steady improvement from August until the end of the season. Our first training camp at Sunapee State Park was a resounding success, and our team dinners were as much fun as always.

The boys repeated as runner-up champions to Bow, but we managed to take it right to the wire and almost pull off an upset at the divisional championship. It would have been easy to sandbag and run for second place, but the boys showed true character and almost pulled off what most cross country aficionados thought was impossible at the beginning of the season.

The girls repeated a near replica of last year's season, winning every major invitational with the exception of second place at the prestigious Manchester Invitational. We are Capital city champs once again after decisively defeating St Paul's on October 20th – a team that finished fourth in New England at the prep school championships last year. The girls won their fifth state title in a row and their seventh in the last eight years and again showed that they are one of the most consistent teams in all of New Hampshire.
