The Spring in Review
What a spring! Success was everywhere at Hopkinton as all of our varsity teams had winning seasons and many went deep into the playoffs. To top it off, we get to celebrate a 5th straight Girls Track and Field Championship and the first ever Boys Lacrosse Championship in school history! Congratulations and thanks to everyone who had a hand in our success.
In addition to celebrating our athletic achievement this spring, tonight we also will be recognizing excellence in the classroom. 74 athletes will receive a certificate for being a Scholar-Athlete; this means that they participated on at least two school sports this year and were listed on the Honor or High Honor Roll every quarter this year. This is an amazing 23% of our entire high school population. Furthermore, we also will be recognizing the nine seniors who participated in a school sport every season of their high school career. They are: Gabby Forrester, Billy French, Cam Givens, Rachel Grady, Sam Helrich, Abbey Luneau, Hallie Loft, Kara McCluskey, and Libby Wetterer.
Congratulations to our graduates, good luck in the future, and thanks for some outstanding memories.

First I want to say “Thank you” to the girls for hanging in there. We had five girls this year who were either new to softball or had very little experience and little experience in the pitching department. Although we only had one win, we won in many other areas. The girls improved in many areas of the game, from going from just watching fly balls hit the ground to moving under them and making the catch. Stealing bases when the signal was given, knowing when to run and when to stay put. This was all seen in our last game while playing a team who had previously twelve-runned us. Although we still did not win we played a full seven innings and only lost by a couple of runs. We all believed that if the season was a little longer we would have started putting checks in the win column. Again thank you girls for a great season

The Hopkinton Hawks JV Baseball team entered the season knowing that they would be facing some tough competition, and sporting a team that was half 8th graders and half freshmen. Still, with some solid pitching, defense, and offense, they emerged with a very respectable 6-8 record.
One of the most impressive performances from this year’s squad came mid-way through the season in a re-match against Bow. In game 1 vs. Bow, the Hawks lost by a score of 18-2 in 5 innings. They hit the ball all over the park and we struggled to make contact. With that game in mind when we traveled down there, we made it a point to prove to them that we were no slouch. Hopkinton put on their game-face that day and came out with a hard fought 3-2 loss that was decided on a tough call in the top of the 7th with the tying run on 3rd. As a coach, I was so proud that a team could really dig down within themselves and play as hard as they did.
Next year will again be a year all about improving. We will lose some players to the Varsity squad and we will again have new faces on the field. The one constant is that this team will continue to work hard and hustle from day 1 until the end.

This was supposed to be a “rebuilding” year for the Hopkinton softball program. With six starters graduating last year, the Hawks had several holes to fill and leaned heavily on a number of players with limited or no varsity experience. Over the course of the season the team grew stronger and stronger. Kara McCluskey blossomed into an ace on the mound, while fellow seniors Gabby Forrester and Molly Noonan each batted over .400. Rounding out the quartet was Rachel Grady, who seemed to be everywhere in the outfield for the Hawks. These four led the team to an 11-7 final record, a win in the “play-in” game, and a hard fought 4-1 loss to Franklin in the first round. One of the true highlights was a victory over eventual Division III runner-up Somersworth 8-5. What made this victory so impressive was the fact that only three weeks earlier, Somersworth had embarrassed the Hawks 19-1 in 5 innings.
Although the four seniors will be difficult to replace, the experience gained by the other members of this team will help a lot in the future. Thanks for a great season,

The varsity baseball team finished the regular season with a 9-7 record good enough for the #8th seed in the Division III tournament. Hosting #9 Belmont, the Hawks played great baseball beating the Red Raiders 7-3. The season came to an end two days later when the Hawks were beat by the #1 Somersworth club. A few of the seasons highlights were a 3-2 win over Derryfield at Fishercat Stadium, Sam Bonifant throwing a no-hitter vs rival Hillsboro and the commitment that 16 players made to making Hopkinton baseball one of the elite programs in Division 3. These same 16 players will be back again next season ready to compete for a longer season.
Receiving recognition for outstanding play by the Coaches Association were: Sam Bonifant and Sam McManus who were both named 1st team All State. Jay White was named 2nd team All State and Colin O’Keeffe made the 3rd team. As for team awards: Matt Gleason was named the Mike Fulton Teammate of the Year Award winner for his attitude, commitment and dedication to Hawk Baseball.

The team started the season off with three straight wins including a win vs Kearsarge under the lights at NEC. Vacation week was a bit of a setback as the team dropped two in a row including a double-overtime heartbreaker at Kingswood. The team rebounded nicely, however, and won 7 of its last 8 including a win against then-unbeaten Plymouth. The Hawks finished the regular season as the 4th seed with a 10-3 record.
In the playoffs, the Hawks made short work of Con-Val and brought the team to SNHU to face top seeded Plymouth in the Semi-finals. There the dream run came to an end. Still, this young team (including two rookie coaches) learned and grew so much over the season. Exceptional sophomore and freshmen classes helped lead the way, as did the leadership of the three seniors Abbey Luneau, Rachel LeGros, and Hallett Sargent. The four returning juniors will be asked to provide similar leadership roles for the team as they hope to make it even further next year.

We had quite a year this year. Friendships were made. Meets were won and lost. We all shared a demanding work load.
The weather did not cooperate very well this year-it seemed we only had really good weather on days off. We had many meets in the cold and even one in a snowstorm!
New school records were established in Women's 100M, 100 Hurdles and 300 Hurdles. On the Men's side new records were set in the 4x100M sprint relay, 110 Hurdles, 300M Hurdles, 1600M and 3200M.
Our girls finished their fifth season as undefeated state champions in Class M&S. We traveled to the New Englands last Saturday with ten athletes, the most of any team in our division. The boys finished a strong 6th. As in the other spring sports, the addition of several smaller D2 schools has made our division much more competitive.
We will sorely miss our Seniors and Exchange Students: Libby Wetterer, Megan Edmonds, Sarah Metcalf, Berthlyn Browne, Erin Bostic, Laura Jones, Tyler-Ann Mack, Fabian Stocek, Sam Hill, Sam Helrich, Ben Spaulding and Ben Dalzell. Good luck to them next year. Many will be competing in college sports.

Boys Lacrosse
Captains: Billy French and Brooks Wood
The Boys Lacrosse team kept improving during their successful regular season to become the best team in the playoffs and resulted in the program's first State Championship. After losing early in the season, two one-goal games to the "preseason favorites," Kearsarge and Hollis-Brookline, the Hawks reeled off ten straight victories to conclude the season. Highlights of the regular season were Ned Metcalf's 4 goal performance (including the game winner in overtime) against Pelham, Billy French (First Team All-State) stepping up his game when Brooks Wood (First Team All-State) got injured, and the consistently outstanding performance of our long poles: Ben Harrington (First Team All-State), Cam Givens (Honorable Mention All-State), and Bennett Mosseau.
The Hawk's five seniors led the way in the Tournament. Brooks Wood's dramatic overtime goal against Kearsage in the semi-finals led to Matt French's fourth quarter heroics to seal the State Championship for the Hawks.
