FALL 2017 ATHLETIC NEWSLETTER
JV Field Hockey
Captains: Lillian Eckberg and Maddie Bishop
The JV field hockey team had a great season. Together we worked on strengthening our skills and creating a bond as a team. Our team was made up of players who had never played before and players who had a few years under their belt. Once we hit the field and it was game time these girls united and played strong together.
This season we went 5-5-2. Our team was led by captains Lillian Eckberg and Maddie Bishop. Maddie ended the season being our top goal scorer with 5 goals. Our defense was strong this season and it was led by Myah Kerbyson. Overall the team worked together scoring 16 goals and only letting 10 goals in for the season.
This team truly loved playing together. They created a friendship that was strong on and off the field. I look forward to seeing them grow as field hockey players and I am excited to see what next season brings. Thank you to the girls and their parents for your support and commitment this season.

JV Boys Soccer
Captain: Steven Newton-Delgado
This was a fun and developing season for Boys JV soccer. The boys finished their season 8-6-2 and with only 13 rostered players, showed incredible competitiveness throughout the entire season. For many the team tactics and possession play were a new concept to understand, but all bought into it and learned much throughout the season. The team was lead this year by freshman Steven Newton-Delgado as captain and starting goalkeeper. Ronald Finlayson, Thomas Hoffman, and Sam Brown led our defense this year and shut down many strong offensive attacks. The offense this year was led by Connor Daniels, Andrew Beckwith, Ian Heck, and Logan Rockwood. Great season this year and incredible job learning how to play the beautiful game.

JV Girls Soccer
Captains Elizabeth Berliner and Sophia Staples-Roy
The JV girls team went undefeated this year in the regular season with a 14-0 record. This was a great group of girls that came together from 3 grade levels to form one cohesive team! Throughout the season, all of the players showed tremendous growth and were very supportive of each other. By the end of the season, every player on the team had scored a goal with the exception of our goalie, who even had an assist on record! The girls were also very versatile, playing wherever I moved them.
Our goalie, Emily Fleegle was busy shutting down the opposing teams with the help of the strong defensive line, only letting up 14 goals in the regular season! The strong offense scored a total of 78 goals in the regular season led by high goal scorers: Ashlee Brehio, Annie Higginbotham and Savannah Wagemann.
The team ended the season by winning the JV tournament, scoring 17 goals and only letting up 2 the whole day. I am so proud of all of the girls for their teamwork and effort this season!

Varsity Golf
Captains: Trent Gagnon and Larsen Burack
The team’s lone senior, Trent Gagnon made the cut for the state individual tournament shooting an 89 at Canterbury Country Club. While the second day did not go as well for Trent he continued to show class and sportsmanship while representing Hopkinton.
With a solid group of underclassman, the Hawks qualified for the state tournament with a record of 10-8. Seeded 6th. At the state match the Hawks stayed consistent finishing 6th.
Highlights for the Hawks: Larsen Burack ended the season with the team low scoring average of 46.5 while playing in 9 matches. Trent Gagnon, Kiernan Bryne and Andrew Fairneny all finished with a scoring average under 50. Each member of the team got to compete in at least 2 matches. Big victories on the season were Sunapee, Newport, Farmington and Littleton. With 12 golfers returning and plenty of potential the Hawks look to return to the tournament next season.
Great job this year guys, nice to see the improvement and the sportsmanship.

Redhawks Cooperative Football
Captains: Aidan Horne, Carter Quiet
The Redhawks finished their second season as a varsity program, with a record of 1-7 in Division II. The 2017 team was led by 16 returning players, and 14 brand new players, leading to valuable varsity playing time and experience for a handful of freshman. With a commitment to getting stronger in the weight room, and to gaining more knowledge of the game itself, all returning and new players in 2018, should have a smooth transition to newly realigned Division III Football in 2018! Best of luck to our Hopkinton seniors Aidan, Carter, and Alex.

Varsity Field Hockey
Captains Emmy Cambell, Lilly Hoffman
The Varsity Field Hockey team had a successful season finishing sixth with a record of 9-5. The team was in every game losing two of the five in overtime and another two by one goal. Junior Goalie Maddie McCluskey had an outstanding season, racking up six shutouts with the help of Senior captain defenseman Carley Kanter . Leading scorers were Sophomores Katie Meserve with 15 goals and Fiona Beane with 11 goals. Junior Chloe Wood led the team with 15 assists. The team had an early exit from the state tournament but with the majority of the team returning next season, we have much to look forward to. Congratulations to all our seniors Carley Kanter, Claire Ready, Jennifer Lewis and Lilly Hoffman.

Varsity Girls Soccer
Captains: Caitlin Ball and Grace Clark
The Hawks placed 4th in the division outscoring their opponents 70 to 20. Junior Goal Keeper Amelia Bassett had her share of exciting statistics with 114 saves and 7 shutouts on the season. Her defense was solid with Seniors Belle Sullivan, co-captain Caitlin Ball and Cathen Hall all holding attackers at bay. Junior co-captain Grace Clark would post 29 of our 70 overall goals. Senior Taylor Signor would end up leading our assists with a total of 13 and she could often be seen scoring goals from flying headers. Although this pair was exciting to watch, Senior midfielder Catherine O'Keeffe was creating offense consistently by taking 59 shots, 6 goals and 2 assists.
The Hawks finished the season with a record of 13-4-1, topping Derryfield 3-0 in the first round but dropping a closely contested match to Belmont, 1-0 in the quarterfinals. Thank you to all of our wonderful players, parents, and fans.

Varsity Cross Country
Captains: Ella Whipps and JJ Locke
This year’s cross country team boasted a large final roster of 32 athletes, evenly split between boys and girls.
The girl’s team, led by the dynamic duo of Sydney Stockwell and Emma Rothe (top ten at D III championships), made its mark in Division III, as well as with the other divisions. The team easily won its homecoming race and placed second in some big multi-divisional invitational races throughout the season. Bolstered by a new crew of incoming freshmen, the scoring team was comprised of entirely sophomores and freshmen. A tough season of rotating illnesses definitely challenged them, but they rallied in the end and prevailed as runner-up for the D III championships, moving up from an 8th place finish the previous year and qualifying for the Meet of Champions. With even more young talent moving up next year from middle school, this impressive team will be the one to watch in the coming years.
The boy’s team may have lost the majority of its scoring team from last year, but with a new group of incoming freshmen, the team worked hard and progressed well. Led by incoming freshman Joe Tierney, this team had a nice mix of juniors, sophomores, and freshmen that consistently improved throughout the season and finished 11th overall at the D III championships (just one place off from the previous year). All in all, the team put in a great effort during training and many of the boys cut minutes off their times as the races went on.
Thank you to all the athletes and the parents in helping to keep such a big team working together successfully for a great season!

Varsity Boys Soccer
Captains: Gerry Donahue, Dustin Rose, Max Rossignol, and Zach Signor
The Hawks charged through the division again during the 2017 season, earning the #2 seed in the tournament by notching 14 regular-season wins. Highlights of the regular-season included all 15 varsity players scoring a goal and an exciting overtime victory at Belmont. During the post-season, the excitement ratcheted up a few notches in the semi-final game as we tied the match with under three minutes to go in regulation on an Azarius Meister goal before Paul Molnar sent us to the championship with his overtime golden goal. In the championship we played a high-level match against a very skilled opponent and even carried a 1-0 lead into halftime before conceding two 2nd half goals and losing 2-1.
The group of seniors this year have left a strong impression on our program and leadership will be hard to replace. Gerry Donahue has the record for Hopkinton goals scored in a single-season at 27, Max Rossignol ran the offensive show from his center mid position, Dustin Rose and Zach Signor teamed up to be a formidable defensive line, Azarius Meister's hounding presence up top earned the big goal in the semi-finals and Zach 'Berlinho' Berliner scored some solid goals as we discovered his offensive prowess late in the season.
